Officially known as the Appalachian National Scenic Trail, the Appalachian Trail extends from Georgia to Maine for 2,170 miles.  It is a national treasure both for the through-hiker and the local or regional hiking enthusiast. We are fortunate to have over 80 miles of the Appalachian Trail close to our North Carolina Smoky Mountain bed and breakfast.

The nearest trailhead is in the Nantahala River Gorge, just 15 minutes away from Bryson City, NC. From the Nantahala River, the Appalachian Trail extends northward 29 miles to Fontana Dam, ranging in elevation from 1,700 to 5,000 feet.

Further north, the Appalachian Trail enters the North Carolina Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which boasts the highest elevation on the trail at Clingman's Dome.  The trail reaches 6,625 feet in elevation at this point, prompting some optimistic through-hikers to comment, "It's all down hill from here."

From the Nantahala River heading south, the Appalachian Trail extends past the North Carolina state line, ranging in elevation from 1,700 to 5,500 feet.  This portion of the trail offers stunning views from natural openings and fire towers.
